Whirlpool is one of the most common refrigerator brands I work on in Houston. Side-by-side, French door, top freezer β they are in kitchens all over Katy, Sugar Land, and Pearland. And when they stop cooling, people want answers fast.
Food goes bad quickly in Houston heat. I get it. So I want to walk you through exactly what I find on Whirlpool refrigerator calls β the real causes, not a generic list. I will tell you what each problem looks like, how I diagnose it, and what the repair costs.
Whirlpool refrigerators are actually well-built machines. Most of them last 12 to 15 years with no major issues. When they do break down, it is usually one of five things. Let me take you through each one.
Cause 1: Evaporator Fan Motor Failure
This is the most common cause I find on Whirlpool cooling calls. The evaporator fan sits in the freezer compartment. Its job is to pull air over the evaporator coils and push cold air through the vents into both the freezer and the fridge section.
When that fan stops, cold air stops moving. The freezer might stay cold for a while because it is right next to the coils. But the refrigerator section warms up fast. That is why so many Whirlpool owners call me and say the same thing: freezer is fine, fridge is warm.
How do I know it is the fan? I open the freezer and listen. If I hear the compressor running but no fan noise, that tells me a lot. I pull off the back panel inside the freezer and check the fan motor directly. On most Whirlpool models, the fan is pretty easy to access. I test it with a multimeter. A failed motor reads open β no continuity.
Sometimes the motor is fine but ice has built up around the fan blades and locked them in place. That points to a defrost system problem, which I will cover in a moment.
Evaporator fan motor replacement on a Whirlpool runs $170 to $260 total, parts and labor included. Most of the time I can get it done same day because I carry common Whirlpool fan motors in the truck.
I recently did this exact repair in Houston on a Whirlpool side-by-side. You can read the full details in the Whirlpool GSS26C5XXY02 evaporator fan failure case. The customer had been dealing with a warm fridge for a week before calling. Motor was dead. New motor, same day, problem solved.
Cause 2: Defrost System Failure
Whirlpool refrigerators defrost automatically. Every several hours, the defrost heater turns on and melts any frost that has built up on the evaporator coils. Then the heater turns off and the cooling cycle starts again.
When the defrost system fails, frost keeps building up on the coils. Eventually the coils are completely covered in ice. Air cannot flow through them. The refrigerator stops cooling.
This failure mode is sneaky because it happens slowly. The fridge gets a little warmer each day. After a week or two, the food starts to go bad. By the time I get there, the evaporator is a solid block of ice.
There are three parts in the defrost system that can fail: the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, and the defrost timer or control board. On older Whirlpool models there is a mechanical timer. On newer ones the control board handles the defrost cycle.
I test each component individually. The heater should have continuity. The thermostat should be closed at freezer temperatures. If either one is open, I found my culprit.
Before I replace parts, I always defrost the evaporator manually with a steamer. Once the coils are clear, I can see if the fins are damaged, which sometimes happens when ice builds up too thick for too long.
Defrost heater and thermostat replacement runs $160 to $240. If the control board is causing the defrost cycle to fail, that adds to the cost, which I will cover below.
Cause 3: Main Control Board Failure
The main control board is the brain of the refrigerator. It manages the compressor, the defrost cycle, the fan motors, temperature control, and the display. When it fails, things get unpredictable.
Sometimes the fridge stops cooling entirely. Sometimes it cools inconsistently. Sometimes the display goes blank or shows error codes. Sometimes the compressor runs constantly and the fridge gets too cold.
Main board failure is harder to diagnose than a failed fan or defrost heater. I have to rule out the simpler causes first. If the fan is good, the defrost system is good, the compressor is running, and the fridge still is not cooling right, the control board becomes the suspect.
I look for visible damage on the board β burned spots, swollen capacitors, corroded connections. I also check the board outputs with a multimeter to confirm it is or is not sending correct signals to the components.
I handled a main board failure on a Whirlpool in Houston recently. The unit was a Whirlpool 25MCD that had completely stopped cooling. The compressor was fine, the fan was fine, but the board had burned out and was not sending power to either. Full story is in the Whirlpool 25MCD no cooling main board failure case. New board, unit back to normal the same day.
Main control board replacement on a Whirlpool runs $280 to $420 total. The board itself varies a lot in price by model. I source OEM Whirlpool boards when possible for reliability.
Cause 4: Condenser Coils Clogged With Dust
This one catches people off guard. The condenser coils are at the bottom or back of the refrigerator, depending on the model. Their job is to release the heat that was pulled out of the fridge into the room.
When those coils get clogged with dust and pet hair, the refrigerator cannot release heat efficiently. The compressor has to work much harder. The fridge runs warmer than it should. Over time, the compressor can overheat and shut off on its thermal protection, which causes the fridge to stop cooling.
In Houston homes with pets or dusty garage locations, I see coils that are completely packed. Some look like they have a felt blanket on them.
Cleaning the condenser coils is not technically a repair. I do it as part of every service call. But if dirty coils are the only problem, I clean them and the fridge usually starts cooling normally within an hour. The condenser fan motor, which pulls air through those coils, can also fail. A failed condenser fan causes the same overheating problem.
Condenser fan motor replacement runs $150 to $230. Coil cleaning alone, if that is the only issue, is covered by the diagnostic fee.
My recommendation: pull your Whirlpool out once a year and vacuum the coils at the bottom. It takes five minutes and can add years to the life of the compressor.
Cause 5: Compressor Failure
Compressor failure is less common on Whirlpool than on some other brands, but it happens. Whirlpool uses conventional piston compressors on most models, not the linear compressors that LG uses. They are reliable, but they do wear out.
Signs of compressor failure: the refrigerator is completely silent when it should be running, or you hear a clicking noise every few minutes as the compressor tries to start and fails. The whole unit is warm, not just the fridge section.
I test the compressor by checking the start relay first. The start relay is a small component that plugs onto the compressor. It costs $15 to $30 and can mimic compressor failure when it dies. I shake it β a failed relay rattles like a maraca. I replace it and see if the compressor starts.
If the relay is fine and the compressor still will not start, I do a resistance test on the compressor windings. A failed compressor reads open or shorted.
Compressor replacement on a Whirlpool runs $550 to $850 total. That includes the compressor, new refrigerant, and labor. On a refrigerator under 8 years old, this repair makes sense. On an older unit, I will give you my honest opinion on whether it is worth it.
Whirlpool Side-by-Side Not Cooling: What Is Different
Whirlpool side-by-side models have a few specific failure points I see more often than on other configurations.
The damper or air diffuser assembly controls how much cold air flows from the freezer side into the fridge side. On Whirlpool side-by-sides, this damper can stick open or closed. If it sticks closed, the fridge stops getting cold air. If it sticks open, the fridge gets too cold and freezes things.
I also see water dispenser valve failures more often on Whirlpool side-by-sides than on other configurations. A leaking or failed inlet valve can cause ice buildup in unexpected places, which can affect cooling and airflow. I worked this exact problem in Sugar Land on a Whirlpool WRS965CIAE00. The dispenser valve had failed and was allowing water to drip into the freezer section. You can see the full repair in the Whirlpool WRS965CIAE00 dispenser valve case from Sugar Land.
Damper assembly replacement runs $150 to $220. Water inlet valve replacement runs $140 to $200.
Whirlpool French Door Not Cooling: What I See Most Often
French door Whirlpool models have become very popular in Houston over the last several years. The WRF555, WRF757, and Gold Series models are the ones I work on most.
The most common issue on French door Whirlpools is the same evaporator fan failure I described above. The fan is in the freezer drawer section at the bottom. When it fails, the two upper fridge doors get warm while the freezer drawer stays cold.
I also see thermistor failures on French door models. Whirlpool French doors have multiple temperature sensors. When one fails, the control board gets bad temperature readings and does not cool the fridge section correctly. The freezer is fine. The fridge is warm. But the fan, coils, and compressor are all working.
Thermistor replacement is one of the least expensive Whirlpool repairs. It runs $110 to $170 total. The part itself is inexpensive. The labor is straightforward.
How I Diagnose a Whirlpool That Stopped Cooling
When I arrive at a Whirlpool cooling call, I follow a specific sequence. I do not guess. I test.
First I check the temperatures. I put a thermometer in both the fridge and freezer sections to see exactly what is happening. Is the fridge warm but the freezer cold? Are both warm? Is the fridge fluctuating?
Then I listen. Is the compressor running? Is the evaporator fan running? Can I hear any unusual sounds?
Then I pull off the back panel inside the freezer. I look at the evaporator coils. Are they iced over? Is the fan spinning? I test the fan motor, the defrost heater, and the defrost thermostat with a multimeter.
I check the condenser coils at the bottom and the condenser fan. I check the start relay on the compressor. If everything in the cooling system tests good, I look at the control board.
Most Whirlpool cooling problems are diagnosed in under 30 minutes. I tell you what I found, what it will cost to fix it, and you decide. No pressure. No surprises.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Whirlpool?
Whirlpool makes solid refrigerators. Most models are worth repairing if they are under 12 years old. Even a $400 repair on a 7-year-old Whirlpool makes financial sense when a comparable new unit costs $1,200 to $2,500.
Here is how I think about it. If the repair cost is less than half the price of a replacement unit and the refrigerator is under 10 years old, repair is almost always the right call. If the compressor failed on a 13-year-old basic model and the repair is $700, that is a harder case, and I will tell you so.
Whirlpool Gold Series and higher-end models are worth repairing even at higher repair costs because the replacement cost is higher. A Gold Series French door that costs $2,000 new is worth a $500 repair at almost any age.
I give you my honest assessment every time. I am not going to push you toward a repair that does not make sense just to make a sale.
Three Things to Check Before You Call Me
I want to save you time and money. Here are three things to check on your own before scheduling a service call.
- Check the temperature controls. Some Whirlpool models have electronic controls that can accidentally get reset to a high temperature. If someone bumped the panel, the fridge might be set to 55 degrees. Check your settings and make sure the fridge is set to 37 degrees and the freezer to 0.
- Check if the condenser coils are accessible at the bottom. Pull the fridge away from the wall and look at the bottom front grill. If you can remove it and you see a wall of dust and pet hair, that might be your whole problem. Vacuum the coils and wait 24 hours to see if cooling improves.
- Listen at night when the house is quiet. You should hear the compressor cycle on and off roughly every 8 to 15 minutes. You should also hear the fan inside the freezer. If you hear the compressor but no fan, that points to the evaporator fan. If you hear nothing at all, that points to the compressor or control board.
If none of those help, that is what I am here for.
What to Do Right Now If Your Whirlpool Stopped Cooling
Move your perishables to a cooler or a neighbor's fridge. Food in a warm refrigerator will spoil faster than you think, especially in Houston. Do not wait until the next day to deal with the food.
Do not put warm food into the refrigerator hoping it will cool down. If the fridge is not cooling, adding warm food just makes the problem worse for the food that is already in there.
You can try unplugging the refrigerator for 5 minutes and plugging it back in. Sometimes a control board can glitch and a reset helps. But do not keep cycling power. If it does not start cooling after one reset, call a technician.
