🔍 Diagnosis / Cause Found
When I arrived at the Memorial home, the customer told me food in the refrigerator section had been freezing for several days. I pulled out my thermometer and confirmed the fresh food compartment was sitting at 15°F. The set point was 37°F. The freezer section was operating normally at 0°F, which told me the sealed system was not the issue on this Sub-Zero 632/S. R-134a pressures checked out within spec, so I moved my attention to the control electronics and the temperature sensing circuit. I pulled the refrigerator temperature sensor and measured its resistance with my multimeter. The reading was within the normal range for the ambient temperature, which meant the sensor itself was sending a plausible signal. The problem was that the main control board was interpreting that signal incorrectly. On the Sub-Zero 632/S, the main board handles temperature regulation for both compartments independently. When the board develops a fault in the analog input circuit, it reads a warmer temperature than what actually exists in the compartment and responds by overcooling. I confirmed this by cross-referencing the sensor output voltage against what the board was displaying. The board was reading the compartment as if it were 55°F and driving the cooling cycle continuously. Given the board fault and the sensor's age, I decided to replace both components together to prevent a callback.

🔧 Repair Performed
Step 1: Confirmed refrigerator compartment temperature at 15°F using a calibrated digital thermometer placed at center shelf level. Verified freezer at 0°F and confirmed no sealed system faults.. Step 2: Connected manifold gauges to the Sub-Zero 632/S service ports and verified R-134a low-side pressure at approximately 2 psi and high-side at 130 psi, both within normal range for current ambient temperature of 72°F, ruling out a refrigerant charge issue.. Step 3: Removed the interior rear panel in the refrigerator section to access the temperature sensor. Disconnected the sensor and measured resistance with a Fluke 117 multimeter. Reading was 10.2 kOhm at 72°F ambient, consistent with a functional NTC thermistor.. Step 4: Accessed the main control board located at the top of the unit behind the front grille panel. Measured the voltage signal from the sensor at the board input terminal. Board was interpreting the sensor signal as a reading consistent with 55°F compartment temperature, confirming the board's analog input circuit was faulty.. Step 5: Powered down the unit and disconnected the main control board. Retrieved the OEM replacement Sub-Zero main control board and the matching OEM temperature sensor from parts stock carried in the service truck.. Step 6: Installed the new main control board, secured all wire harness connectors to their correct terminals, and confirmed all ribbon cable connections were fully seated.. Step 7: Installed the new OEM temperature sensor in the refrigerator compartment, routed the wiring correctly behind the rear panel, and reinstalled the interior panel.. Step 8: Powered the unit on and monitored operation for 45 minutes on site. Refrigerator compartment dropped from ambient to 38°F within that window. I confirmed the board was reading the sensor correctly. After a 2-hour runtime the customer reported back to me that the compartment was holding steady at 37°F. Freezer remained at 0°F throughout.
