LG Refrigerator Not Cooling? Here's What I Find When I Open It Up in Houston

LG refrigerators are everywhere in Houston. French door, side-by-side, bottom freezer — I work on all of them, and the most common call I get is the same thing: the fridge stopped cooling. Freezer is fine, or the whole unit is warm, and the food is starting to go bad.

I want to give you a real answer — not a list of YouTube troubleshooting steps, but what I actually see when I pull these units out and open them up. Because LG cooling problems almost always come from a small set of causes, and once you know which one you're dealing with, the repair path is clear.

The #1 Cause: LG Linear Compressor Failure

If your LG fridge stopped cooling completely — fridge warm, freezer also struggling — there's a good chance the linear compressor has failed. LG introduced the inverter linear compressor across most of their models starting around 2013, and while it's quieter and more efficient than traditional compressors, it has a well-documented failure rate, especially on units 4–8 years old.

What you'll notice: the fridge runs but nothing gets cold. You might hear a clicking sound as the compressor tries to start and fails. Or it might just be completely silent when it should be running.

When I test a suspected compressor failure I check the start relay first — it's a small component that costs $15–30 and sometimes mimics compressor failure symptoms. If the relay is fine and the compressor isn't starting, I do a resistance test on the compressor windings. A failed linear compressor reads open or shorted — there's no ambiguity.

LG compressor replacement in Houston runs $600–$950 total including the compressor, refrigerant, and labor. LG extended their compressor warranty to 10 years on many models — it's worth checking your model number against LG's warranty terms before paying out of pocket. I've helped customers get this covered more than once.

You can see a real example of this repair in our LG LFX28978ST freezer not cooling case from Houston — that one had a failed linear compressor on a 6-year-old unit.

FF-E Error Code: Evaporator Fan Failure

The second most common LG cooling problem I see in Houston is the FF-E error code — or its variations (Er FF, FF E, 1F E). This error means the freezer fan motor has failed or the evaporator fan in the freezer compartment is blocked by ice.

Here's what happens: LG French door and side-by-side models use a single evaporator in the freezer that cools both the freezer and the refrigerator sections through a shared airflow system. If that evaporator fan stops — whether from a failed motor or from ice buildup blocking the blades — the refrigerator section loses cooling first. The freezer may stay cold for a while because it's directly above or beside the evaporator. But eventually both sides warm up.

Houston's humidity makes this worse. Every time the door opens, warm humid air gets in and can frost over the evaporator fan assembly faster than the defrost system can handle. I see this especially in summer — which is most of the year here.

The fix depends on what I find. If it's just ice blocking the fan, I defrost the assembly and check the defrost heater and thermostat to prevent recurrence. If the fan motor itself has failed, I replace it. Fan motor replacement runs $180–$280 total. If the defrost system has also failed, add $80–$120 for that repair.

I documented a case exactly like this: LG FF error — freezer fan failure in Houston. The customer had been living with a warm fridge for two weeks before calling. The fan motor was seized and the evaporator was completely iced over.

LG Not Cooling But Freezer Is Fine — What This Tells Me

When customers tell me "the freezer works but the fridge isn't cold," that's actually useful diagnostic information. It almost always points to one of three things:

  1. Damper door failure. LG uses a motorized damper (also called an air diffuser) to control airflow from the freezer into the refrigerator section. If this damper motor fails in the closed position, cold air can't get to the fridge. The freezer stays cold, the fridge warms up. Damper replacement runs $150–$230.
  2. Evaporator fan partially blocked. The fan is running but ice has partially blocked the airflow into the fridge section. The freezer gets priority airflow and stays cold. Fix: defrost + defrost system check.
  3. Thermistor failure. LG refrigerators have temperature sensors (thermistors) in both the freezer and fresh food sections. If the fresh food thermistor fails and reads the wrong temperature, the control board thinks the fridge is already cold and doesn't call for cooling. Thermistor replacement is $120–$180.

I worked a case in Cypress recently — LG LSXS26073S with freezer fan failure — where the customer described exactly this: freezer fine, fridge warm. Turned out to be a combination of a partially blocked fan and a failed damper motor. Two-part repair, done same day.

LG Error Codes That Point to Cooling Problems

LG refrigerators are good at telling you what's wrong if you know how to read them. Here are the codes I see most often on cooling calls:

Error CodeWhat It MeansTypical Repair Cost
FF-E / Er FFFreezer evaporator fan failure or ice blockage$180–$280
CF-E / Er CFCondenser fan motor failure$160–$260
DH-F / Er DHDefrost heater failure$160–$240
1F-E / Er 1FIce maker fan motor failure$170–$260
CL-E / Er CLDefrost sensor failure$130–$190
IF-E / Er IFIce maker failure$200–$380
No codeCompressor failure or sealed system issue$600–$950

* Error codes can vary slightly by model year. If your display shows letters and numbers you don't recognize, write them down and mention them when you call — I can usually identify the issue before I even arrive.

How Much Does LG Refrigerator Repair Cost in Houston?

ProblemRepair Cost (parts + labor)
Start relay replacement$120–$160
Evaporator fan motor$180–$280
Condenser fan motor$160–$260
Defrost heater + thermostat$160–$260
Damper door motor$150–$230
Thermistor (temperature sensor)$120–$180
Control board$280–$420
Linear compressor replacement$600–$950
Sealed system / refrigerant leak$500–$850

The diagnostic fee is $89 and applies toward any repair. I always give you a written estimate before touching anything. If the repair doesn't make financial sense — for example, a compressor replacement on a 12-year-old unit — I'll tell you that directly.

Should You Repair or Replace an LG That's Not Cooling?

For most LG refrigerators under 10 years old — repair. Even a $700 compressor replacement is a fraction of what a new LG French door costs ($1,800–$3,500), and a new unit means delivery headaches, losing everything in your fridge and freezer during the swap, and starting the clock over on warranty.

The exception is when I find a sealed system failure on an older unit — a refrigerant leak in the evaporator or condenser coils. If the coils are corroded and leaking, and the unit is 10+ years old, the repair cost may not be worth it. I'll tell you honestly.

LG also extended their linear compressor warranty to 10 years on most models sold after 2017. If your LG is under 10 years old and the compressor has failed, check your purchase date and model number — you may be entitled to a free compressor replacement through LG. I can help you navigate that process.

What to Do Right Now If Your LG Isn't Cooling

  1. Check the error code on the display. Write it down. If there's no code, note whether the freezer is still cold or both sides are warm — that narrows it down significantly.
  2. Listen for the compressor. Put your hand on the back of the fridge near the bottom. You should feel slight vibration when the compressor runs. No vibration and silence usually means compressor or start relay.
  3. Don't unplug and replug repeatedly. Some customers try to reset the unit by cycling power. This is fine once, but doing it repeatedly on a failing compressor can damage it further.
  4. Move food to a cooler or a neighbor's fridge. A full fridge that loses cooling will spoil faster. Get the perishables out while you wait for service.
